Accessibility Guidelines and Web Standards

Design and development of the Kids in the Creek website adheres to the following:

  • U.S. Federal Government Section 508 (1194.22) Accessibility Guidelines
  • W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0), Priority 2
  • Web Standards Validation as HTML5, per the W3C Markup Validation Service

Accessibility Features:

  • Navigation may be accomplished within pages, and from page to page, using the keyboard TAB key for link focus, and the keyboard ENTER key for link activation. This is necessary if one is unable to use a mouse, or using an alternative web browser.
  • A “Skip Navigation” link is present at the very top of every page (visible when tabbed or hovered). This permits skipping the extensive main menu bar to proceed directly to page text when using TAB navigation.
  • Navigation and website elements are not color or motion dependent.
  • External links open in a new window or tab, as well as document and multimedia links. Link titles notify the user that the link opens in a new window or tab.
  • The website display degrades gracefully to linear text if the website’s stylesheet and/or JavaScript is disabled. Images (other than the Header logo) are not used to display text. Image titles and alternate descriptions are available for text-only web browsers.
